Cinematic Christmas classics

If you’re looking for some good holiday cheer for the break, start with one of these movies. Here are our staff picks for the best seasonal films.

Miracle on 34th Street (1947) Macy’s is looking for a new Santa Claus (Edmund Gwenn) at the holidays, and executive Doris Walker (Maureen O’Hara) hires a man claiming to be the Kriss Kringle. He is then deemed as insane because he believes he is the real Santa and is then put on trial. The lawyer defending him argues that he is the real thing while the jury is torn on how they should rule their verdict.

Elf (2003)- After wreaking havoc in what he knew as home, the North Pole, Buddy the Elf (Will Ferrell) is told by Santa Claus that his father, Walter Hobbs (James Caan) who was never told Buddy existed, lives in New York and is on the naughty list. In lieu of this news, Buddy travels to New York to reconnect with his father and be accepted for who he is.

The Santa Clause (1994)- Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) accidently kills Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, and puts on Santa’s suit to deliver the rest of the toys because of his son Charlie Calvin (Eric Lloyd). Scott and Charlie later find that Scott is the new Santa, which Charlie fully believes in while Scott is in denial about the truth.

Frosty the Snowman (1969)- A living snowman named Frosty (Jackie Vernon) and a little girl try to outwit a greedy magician who is after the snowman’s magical hat.

Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)- A reindeer named Rudolph (Billy Mae Richards) has an odd nose and is left out because of it. He and his outcast friends go on a mission to find a place they fit in and discover that where they belong, and find out it is where they were all along.

White Christmas (1954)- After leaving the Army after World War II, Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby) and Phil Davis (Danny Kaye) team up with sisters Judy (Vera-Ellen) and Betty (Rosemary Clooney) Haynes for singing, dancing, and hijinks on the way to romance.

It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) An angel named Clarence (Henry Travers) saves the life of  suicidal George Bailey (James Stewart) by showing him how his family and friends’ lives would be different if he never lived.

Unaccompanied Minors (2006)- A group of kids hide in an airport so they don’t have to travel over the holidays.

Home Alone (1990)- A little boy (Macaulay Culkin) is accidentally left at home when his large family goes on Christmas vacation to France. He has to deal with idiotic burglars and buying his own food.

Deck The Halls (2006)- Neighbors Buddy Hall (Danny Devito) and Steve Finch (Matthew Broderick) battle after Buddy puts a lot of Christmas lights and decorations on his house that can be seen from space.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)-A mean creature, the Grinch (Jim Carrey), attempts to take away Christmas from The Whos in the village of Whoville because he hates Christmas due to being teased as a child about Christmas.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)- Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon) becomes bored with his duties as the king of Halloween, so when he stumbles upon the wonderful festivities of Christmas, he is amazed and attempts to take the holiday as his own.


Christmas With The Kranks (2004)-When their daughter Blair (Julie Gonzalo) leaves the country, Luther (Tim Allen) and Nora Krank (Jamie Lee Curtis) decide to go on a cruise during Christmas instead of celebrating. When their daughter decides to come back for the annual Christmas party, the whole neighborhood helps the Kranks’ put together a last minute celebration.

The Polar Express (2004)- A magical train takes many kids, some who don’t believe in Santa and some that do to the North Pole on Christmas Eve to see Santa.

A Christmas Story (1983)- A Red Ryder B.B. gun is all Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) wants for Christmas, yet no one will get it for him because he’ll “shoot his eye out!” The movie gives a nostalgic comic look at Christmas in the 1950s.
