Season 20 of ABC’s The Bachelor kicked off on Monday with a personal insight of Ben Higgins’ life. ABC included a recap of Ben on Kaitlyn’s season of The Bachelorette last summer, in which he was kicked off when there were only two other contestants left. Ben’s respectable reaction to Kaitlyn’s rejection established a newfound love for the traveler from Indiana. When it was announced that Ben would be this year’s bachelor, the women of America were delighted. With his overwhelming pretty-boy charm and down to earth qualities, Ben has taken over the Bachelor Nation.

The episode continues with Ben meeting all 26 stunning contestants fighting for his love. The excitement of the women can be heard from inside the limousines as they pull into the driveway. Stepping out of the limo is perhaps the most important moment of the women’s first night on set, considering that this is the first chance they get at impressing the man of their dreams. From throwing a football to bringing their miniature horse along for the ride, the women demonstrate that they will do almost anything to capture Ben’s attention.

The most shocking entrance of the night came from Lace, the real estate agent from Denver, who immediately asks Ben to “close [his] eyes for a second,” and kisses him right on the lips. Other prominent arrivals include Isabel and her warm attire, the set of beautiful blonde twins, and the fluent Russian speaker who walked away before her potential beau could understand a word. Although some of them acted strange when making their first impression, Ben felt that all of the women were “way out of [his] league,” and he “could not be more ready” to get started.

As Ben enters the mansion to progress the first long night of the competition, it becomes evident that this season of The Bachelor will be one to remember. The major plot twist of the season was advertised to be the set of twins from Las Vegas competing against each other. It is quite shocking to see two sisters fighting for the same man, especially while also competing against 24 other women. The other women in the house become nervous about the twins, causing emotions to stir. Ben should have immediately sent the twins home in order to save them from an impending argument that would likely ruin their relationship, but at the rose ceremony he gives each of them their own rose.

Another rose that was not deserved was the last of the night, given to Lace, the kiss bandit. Throughout the episode, Lace was “sitting there judging people,” and aiming rude looks at the other contestants. Her actions led viewers to believe that she was intoxicated, already ruining her reputation. To make matters worse, during the rose ceremony, Lace overreacts to the lack of eye contact made between herself and Ben. She has the nerve to confront Ben about her concern of the shortfall of attention, leaving him confused. This is just a fraction of the drama to appear this season on The Bachelor.

The first episode got viewers excited for what’s to come. This episode deserves an overall rating of 5 out of 5 roses, and whether it be for the drama or Ben himself, the audience is sure to come back for more.
