Released toward the end of April, “Angry Birds Action!” is based off of “The Angry Birds Movie” currently in theaters.

Developed by Tag Games and published by Rovio Entertainment free for Android and iOS, “Angry Birds Action!” is the latest game in the Angry Birds series. It is a simplified version of golf meets pinball without the enjoyable parts of either.

It has the repeated shots of golf, but it only lets you hit the character three times per bird. It has the scoring of pinball without the control over the ball. It also has the shot planning of pool without the enjoyable feeling of satisfaction or the risk of losing your ball. The game is full of repetitive levels, zero challenge and it has a life system that is designed to suck money right out of your wallet.

The game could have been better had Rovio just re-skinned the original game with the characters from the movie. But instead, the company decided to make a “new” and “original” game to go with the film, which has currently made an estimated $73 million since opening weekend.

The app size alone is 895 MB, and as you progress it takes up more and more space to save your progress. This is a large amount of data, especially when playing on a 16 GB phone.

There are some pretty awful games based off of movies on the market, and this one fits in right along with them. Overall, it deserves 1 out of 5 stars. It’s not as if the game didn’t have potential. If the levels were longer, the challenges more difficult, the controls improved, and the physics refined so that the game could feel more playable, then “Angry Birds Action!” would have been more of an enjoyable game.
