Nine wrestlers to represent at state

The boys and girls wrestling teams successfully advanced 9 of their wrestlers onto state. The boys will compete at Grand Prairie and the girls will compete in Garland today and tomorrow.

The boys team placed and put through two of its wrestlers, seniors Joe Head, who took first place at regionals, and Cameron Alaniz, who took second. Junior Xavier Franklin will be an alternate for state.

This is the first time both of these seniors will be going to go wrestle at state.

“I’m glad I was able to make it to state my last year,” Head said.

Getting to this final round, was the only thing that Alaniz seems to have on his mind.

“My goal was to make it to state,” Alaniz said.  “And I made it.”

As their date with state got closer and closer, both boys said they have the same mentality going into the tournament. They need to win at least two matches to be able to make it on the pedestal, but they don’t just want to stop there.

“I’m not just going to try to do that; I’m going to win as much as I can,” Alaniz said. “I’m going to wrestle my butt off since I got a first round pick. I go to wrestle real hard.”

The girls wrestling team placed second overall at region and had seven of its wrestlers moved on to the next phase. Junior Brittany Marshall took her third regional champion title. Senior Selphia Galloway placed second. Senior Karen Aguilera along with sophomores Jezebel Pardo and Jordan Lee placed third; and senior Maria Mulero along with sophomore Angelic Rodriguez took fourth. Senior Jennie Kim is an alternate for state.
