Third period orchestra students prepare for their upcoming concert.

Band, orchestra and choir all share the privilege of making music and performing in front of a crowd willing to listen.

Band is known for its fall performances on the football fields. However, once marching season ends, marching uniforms are traded for tuxes and dresses in a quieter environment. Junior tuba player and choir member Reid Cox knows what it’s like to be on a short schedule with a lot to prepare for.

“We started preparing for the concert just last week,” Cox said. “We had the Veterans day ceremony to prepare for first. Learning so much music isn’t too difficult. Band helps because we can still look at the music [during the concert] unlike choir where we have to memorize the music. Being in both choir and band works OK. They are complete opposites. It’s kind of great. It teaches you to be versatile. Dr. Courtney is much more strict where Decrow is more relaxed and easygoing.”

Choir focuses on several things at a time as well. Music demands constant attention, and students are always looking to improve and prepare for any competitions they may have throughout the year.

“We have four pieces including the one where we perform with the other fine arts groups,” senior choir member Teresa Moncivais said. “We have one performance after another. Once we finish our winter concert, we’re gonna start preparing for UIL in the spring season.”

Some orchestra and band members will be joining the choir in the concert to perform a full symphonic piece. These students spend countless hours with their music in order to sound good on stage.

“It isn’t terribly hard preparing for it,” senior orchestra member Alexa Tizon said. “Mrs. Rich prepares us well for it despite her schedule going back and forth between Huffines and here.”
