Teacher to speak at TEDx

Math teacher will present his idea ‘They don’t know what they don’t know’

Math teacher Aamir Fidai will be presenting his idea, ‘They don’t know what they don’t know,’ at the TEDx talk conference on May 20 at Marcus High School at 6 p.m. Tickets can be bought at TEDxmarcushighschool.org for $65 each.

TEDx talks invite a select group of people with new innovative and groundbreaking ideas and gives them the opportunity to share their visions with the world. The talks are based about an idea that the community chooses.

There will be eight speakers total, and each will give a speech no greater than 18 minutes about ‘Disruptive Innovation’ without the help of any notes or a teleprompter.

“I feel very fortunate that my idea was deemed original and innovative enough to be selected out of hundreds of submissions,” Fidai said. “I’m concerned about the content though. I want to make sure I represent myself, my school and the idea with the dignity it deserves.”

These ideas may be about science, entertainment, culture or any other relevant topic. Fidai’s idea ‘They don’t know what they don’t know’ is about bringing science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers to underprivileged students.

“I will be sharing my experience working with underprivileged students in West Dallas and how I was able to encourage them to go into the STEM fields through after school robotics and STEM club,” Fidai said.

Fidai introduced students to nuclear engineers and scientists, and to ideas they’ve never seen or heard of before. The kids truly enjoyed learning new things. By changing their old ways of thinking he made them think about bigger and better opportunities.

“Change is very scary but very important,” Fidai said. ”In order to get ahead you have to change lanes. If you stay in the same lane you tend to get stuck behind someone else.”
