Junior Seth Miller (93) gets ready to snap the ball to senior Cruz Sustaita (14) for the field goal.

After a 24-28 victory last Friday against the Lake Highlands Wildcats [0-2], the Farmers [1-1] look to improve their record at 7:30 tonight at home against McKinney Boyd [0-2]. It’s the last non-district game of the season.

The team made key plays on the ground throughout the game last week. Rushing for 165 yards and two touchdowns, senior running back Kwame Mickels was a standout player along with senior quarterback Desmond Jefferson who made a 52 yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Tyrell Shavers. A solid fourth quarter performance let the Farmers secure the first victory of the season away from home.

According to offensive lineman coach Tracy Fite, the team is performing better and is training to fix little errors that can cost games throughout the season. A tough and challenging district season is expected, but Fite praises the boys for a successful season so far.

“We got to win which is always great to do,” Fite said. “We definitely improved offensively; we were able to move the ball a lot more and had a lot of positives come out of that. We still have to do better in turnovers and we have to correct that this week if we want to continue to be better.”

Little mistakes are errors that can cause the Farmers a game, but practicing and learning from them is essential. Senior quarterback Jarvis Brooks looks to improve and learn from the errors and turnovers from the last game.

“I’ve got to make wiser decisions and have to listen to Coach Miller, always,” Brooks said. “The first pick I threw I wasn’t listening to coach; he told me to who to throw it to, but I didn’t throw it to him.”

The team has been going through preparations this week looking for the first home win of the season.

“I expect [McKinney Boyd] to come out hard like they did last year,” Mickels said. “We still got a little taste in our mouth…a bitter taste.”

The team is looking for revenge on the Broncos this season. For the past four seasons, McKinney Boyd has always had the advantage; Boyd won 42-31 last season.

“Realizing that we haven’t beat them in a really long time, they are going to be prepared,” junior outside linebacker Elias Rodriguez said. “I’m pretty sure they think it’s going to be a easy win for them, but we are going to put up a fight.”
