District started today at Colleyville-Heritage for the guy’s and girl’s wrestling teams. The boys started at 8 this morning and wrestle tomorrow as well at the same time. The girls start tomorrow at 9 a.m.

If any of the wrestlers place top four in district they move on to region, if they place top four in region they move on to state.

The boys wrestling coach, Noel Peterson, said he believes many of the boys have what it takes to make it all the way to state.

“We have some kids that have good potential,” Peterson said. “So I’m excited.”

As with any big competition like this, nerves or the lack of nerves are always present with many of the boys.

“Once you get nervous you start thinking, you think too much.” junior Xavier Franklin said. “Once you think too much you lose. Once you lose it’s over.”

His fellow teammate, junior Cullen Walsh who has also been on the team since his freshman year, thinks differently.

“Yeah, I get nervous.” Walsh said. “But I just  listen to music and other stuff, [and] just push it out of my mind.”

Peterson said the boys are set and ready to go. He tells the team that the key is to make it to the next round. That’s the only goal, make it to the top four all the way through.

Walsh said he hopes to make region and knows that if he wants to make it, he’s going to have to give it his all.

“I just gotta go out and give it 110 percent,” Walsh said. “What happens happens. The only thing you control is how you wrestle not how the other guy wrestles, so anything can happen.”

All he has to do is just roll the dice, and hope for the best since this junior is wrestling a freshman in district.

At the Timber Creek/Sunset tri the boys won against both teams. Peterson admits that it was entertaining beating Timber Creek since their coach used to be his assistant coach.

At the Reagan tournament that took place last Friday and Saturday, it went really well for the team. The boys won their pool and ended up being seeded number one. Despite winning overall, Peterson was no less proud of the team.

“We ended up wrestling Reagan on Saturday,” Peterson said. “[In the] semifinals, we lost to them. Close match, came back and took third. [It was a] great experience the guys wrestled phenomenal.”

The girls team’s expectations are no different that what their male counterparts are. Place in district, place in region, take it all the way to state. The girls are confident in their teams abilities as well as themselves.

It’s the last year on the team for seniors Jennie Kim and Maria Mulero and they hope they have what it takes to make it to state.

“My expectations [are] definitely [to be] district champions as a team,” Kim said. “And my goal is to be district champion individually.”

Being district champion is the number one thought in many of these wrestlers’ minds.

“I’m excited, I really want to be district champion this year ” Mulero said. “I’m expecting to place at district, place at regionals, and at state.”

Despite the excitement present in the team, for the seniors the sadness and uneasiness of this being the last chance to make it to state is always on their minds.

“My fears are not making it to state,” Mulero said. “Just ending the season quickly more quickly than expected.”
