“I want to have a good future in cosmetology. So if I wake up, and I’m not feeling it that morning, I just have to tell myself ‘I want to have a good future.’”

This week’s Farmer Focus is on junior Angelica Meadows who practices cosmetology and one day hopes to become a professional cosmetologist.

Q: What/who introduced you to cosmetology?

A: “I saw it on Instagram one day. I saw tutorials on how to do makeup, and I thought it was really cool. I thought it would be something I’d like to do.”

Q: What is your favorite part of cosmetology as a whole?

A: “The makeup and hair for sure because those are the two I’m really good at, and I just really like cutting hair. I cut my own hair. I shaved the sides of my head and dye my own hair by myself; it’s pretty complicated.”

Q: Who supports you in all that you do?

A: “Definitely my aunt. She owns a hair salon, so she’s a cosmetologist. She always brings home things for me to practice with and always encourages me to go to more classes, to look at more videos and to practice a lot more because she really wants me to succeed.”

Q: What are your future plans in the cosmetology field?

A: “I plan on going to Regency College or cosmetology school in general to learn how to actually do everything in cosmetology.”

Q: What is one of the greatest struggles that comes with cosmetology?

A:  “Definitely money. Cosmetology is super expensive. Just having to have all the materials that you need and all of the money for the classes…it gets pretty expensive.”

Q: What motivates you on a daily basis?

A: “I want to have a good future in cosmetology. So if I wake up, and I’m not feeling it that morning, I just have to tell myself ‘I want to have a good future.’ That’s what motivates me is wanting to have a better future.”

Q: How long have you been practicing cosmetology?

A: “Well obviously I haven’t been practicing it professionally, but I’ll just sit at my house or come home from school [and] I’ll wipe off all my makeup or get my cousin to come in my room and [I’ll] do her makeup or my makeup. [I’ll] practice all day until I get something right that I wanted to do. But I started wanting to do cosmetology about three years ago. [That’s] when I started trying to do more things with makeup and experimenting with more things.”

Q: What is your favorite makeup look to do on yourself?

A: “My favorite look on myself is definitely the cat eye or winged eyeliner. I do it every day. It is definitely my favorite.”

Q: What is one piece of advice you would give to your younger self?

A: “Just pick one thing; don’t change your profession every five seconds because it’s really hard to take a lot of different classes to be a lot of different things.”
