5. King Kong (1976)
Rating: PG
Directed by: John Guillermin

Starring: Jeff Bridges, Charles Grodin and Jessica Lange
Plot: When the crew of a petroleum exploration arrive on a mysterious island they come face to face with a deadly jungle, savage cannibals and an enormous ape. Will they make it out alive?
Why you should see it: This movie is a technical marvel of the modern age. The entire movie looks gorgeous. They took full advantage of the improved technology of the time and used it to make the film really feel bigger than it was. The Kong in this movie looks spectacular and the acting is great to boot. The story may suffer in places but the movie makes up for it by including some great camera work. It is a good remake and is filled with ’70s charm.

4. A Trip to the Moon (1902)
Rating: G
Directed by: Georges Méliès
Written by: Georges Méliès, Jules Verne and H.G. Wells
Starring: François Lallement and Jules-Eugène Legris
Plot: A group of scientists are sent to study the moon and claim it for their nation.
Why you should see it: It’s a classic in every form. If you’re a fan of older films, you absolutely need to see this movie. The mix of surrealist imagery and the biting criticism is great. The movie is way ahead of its time in terms of storytelling and narrative. Considering it’s now more than 115 years old, the film on Netflix is a revived and enhanced version which includes a new soundtrack by the band Air. It fits very well with the visuals of the film. In addition to having the more well-known black and white version of the film, Netflix also has the colorized version which was considered lost for decades before fans were able to piece it back together. If you’re a fan of classic movies or old films then I can’t recommend this film highly enough.

3. The Monster Squad (1987)
Rating: PG-13
Directed by: Fred Dekker
Written by: Shane Black and Fred Dekker
Starring: Andre Gower, Robby Kiger, Stephen Macht, Duncan Regehr and Tom Noonan
Plot: When a group of bloodthirsty monsters comes to town, a group of five young boys are the only thing standing between them and total world domination.
Why you should see it: I know the plot isn’t that good, but stick with me on this one. This movie is amazing as it’s like the PG-13 version of The Goonies fighting all of the classic universal monsters. It is a beautifully gory, foul mouthed, action packed, ’80s-fueled adventure. If that doesn’t sound like a great movie, it also features some of the best practical effects of the decade.

2. Finding Never Land (2004)
Rating: PG
Directed by: Mark Forster
Written by: David Magee
Based on: The Man Who Was Peter Pan by Allan Knee
Starring: Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet and Julie Christie
Plot: When a struggling playwright befriends a family he soon bonds with the youngest of the children, Peter. He is inspired by the family to create a new play based on the games and adventures that he has with the family. He begins to discover a lot about the family and himself.
Why you should see it: Johnny Depp’s performance in this movie is definitely one of the movies high points. When you see him play this character you don’t see Johnny Depp playing a character, you see the character. The rest of the cast is wonderful too, especially Kate Winslet’s performance as Ms. Davies. The movie claims to be based on a true story, but take that with a grain of salt because some aspects of the movie are accurate while other parts of it were created for the film. Despite the inaccuracy of the film, it’s still a great movie through and through. With a great emotional center, fantastic cast and wonderful direction, it is a definite watch for anyone looking for a modern classic.

1. World’s Fastest Indian (2005)
Rating: PG-13
Written and directed by: Roger Donaldson
Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Diane Ladd and Iain Rea
Plot: This is the story of a man who has a dream to defy all expectations and go faster than anyone has gone before. Will he be able to reach his goal?
Why you should see it: This movie is fantastic. The character of Burt is so likable that you will be brought to tears of joy and admiration when you see him pursuing his goals. Another thing that bolsters the movie is the fact that you probably know or have met someone like Burt in your every day life. This movie can make you feel good about yourself and life in general. This movie is based on a true story and feels amazing to watch with the family. With a cast full of great characters and performances, it’s a must watch for anyone looking for a good time at home.
