Every year there is one night dedicated to outstanding movies, TV shows, music and all things pop culture: the People’s Choice Awards. This awards show differs from others for one particular reason: the deciding votes come from those who aren’t actors, directors or musicians.

During the awards, viewers sit on the couch with a bowl of popcorn in their laps as their eyes stare at the TV in anticipation. Their hearts pound as the camera reveals their favorite actor or actress as the announcers proclaim them as one of the nominees for the category they’ve been anxiously waiting to hear. A clip of each nominee flashes onto the screen from the work they were nominated for. The cameras pan back to the announcer and five seconds pass before the winner is announced and finally the anxiety washes away.

This year’s People’s Choice Awards will air on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 8 p.m. CST on E!.
