Block lunch at Harmon is set to begin sometime between Oct. 3 and Oct. 26.

There is not yet a set schedule for how block lunch will work, but the staff at Harmon is working to make sure school wide topics are addressed that will make the transition to block lunch easier. This includes coming up with a tutoring schedule and making sure students are prepared for the change.

“We have been looking at this for the last year in terms of how it will function here at Harmon,” principal Tony Fontana said. “We wanted to make sure we learned from other schools and maybe [considered] issues or concerns they had with starting block lunch.”

Harmon’s cafeteria currently has two serving lines and a concession stand. To better serve the students, five serving lines are needed. The building is not prepared for the five lines as equipment is needed for the expansion.

“We have to do some of the work before we can go to block lunch,” Fontana said.

The staff wants to make sure they can offer the best services and opportunities for students to utilize. Block lunch will give students extra time to get plugged in with clubs and organizations, as well as allow them the opportunity to attend tutoring built into school hours.

“Hopefully we get students involved with activities that will keep them interested in school and share their interests,” Fontana said. “[This will] allow them to enhance their experiences and learning.”

Students see the idea of block lunch as a useful resource.

“Block lunch is so crowded but it’s good because everyone gets to eat and not leave hungry,” sophomore Kailyn Deleon said. “With my extra time in lunch, I will talk to my friends and do homework for classes I need to finish.”
