JWAC has been making Valentine’s at weekly meetings for the nursing home.

Junior World Affairs Council plans to pay a visit to the residents of the Lewisville Estates-Senior Living after school on Wednesday, Feb. 15. Members will bring handmade Valentine’s Day cards to the elderly and spend time with them. While most think of their significant others on this holiday, JWAC members think of those who tend to be forgotten.

“This Valentine’s Day, JWAC hopes to make the elderly feel like they matter and build a strong connection with the residents so they will know someone still cares for them,” senior JWAC co-president Zarrin Bashir said.

In a time where love is being displayed, everyone hopes to get their fair share of the affection.  With the public rushing to find the perfect card and gift for their loved ones, people tend to neglect the time they spend with the residents of nursing homes.

“Sometimes the elderly in a community can easily be an afterthought, but it’s something we try to make a priority,” senior JWAC co-president Kara Douglas said. “They’re still just like the rest of us and enjoy meeting new people and sharing their own experiences with the youth.”

Attending this nursing home has been a tradition for JWAC; many members have formed bonds with those living in the Lewisville Estates. Students have been able to hear the wisdom and stories of residents, as well as share some experiences of their own.

“A lot of the JWAC kids go back and visit the people they had a connection with because some of [the residents] don’t like to be social or don’t have a lot of family so [students] going to visit is an amazing thing,” coordinator Jayne Keane said.

Whether it is handing them a Valentine or asking them how their day was, JWAC hopes to put a smile on the residents’ faces. Members joined this group to display their respect for those of all backgrounds, which they demonstrate through events such as this.

“I think we should always care for people and show kindness to everyone young or old, and this event represents just that to me,” Bashir said.
