StuCo works tirelessly behind scenes for school: Give credit where it’s due

Homecoming, prom, Friday night football games, Rowdy Crowd, dodgeball tournaments, teacher appreciation week. That list isn’t even close to showing the full scope of the events that Student Council organizes or helps sponsor. Vice president Irisa Ona said that StuCo just wants to help.

The student council does more than just school spirit events, too. They sponsor many things that involve giving back to the community, and things generally geared towards making the city of Lewisville and LHS a better place. StuCo sponsors things like the recycling program and Relay For Life, designed to help others and create a stronger, better community.

The problem is that StuCo and its officers often don’t get the credit they deserve for the massive workload they take on, and the countless hours they put in to make high school an interesting time in the lives of the students who go here.

Unfortunately, all too often the only time StuCo receives feedback is when someone wants to complain. But so what if they miss a recycling bin one day? They have a canned food drive to worry about, or maybe they were at the airport greeting soldiers returning from deployment. Or maybe they were too busy with their mentoring program for elementary school students.

If there wasn’t a StuCo, this school would be a much more boring place to be. Students would be in their desks at 8:15, drag themselves to their four classes and then leave eagerly at the 3:30 bell.

There would be no pep rallies, no homecoming and no field days. The institution of Lewisville High School would turn into something entirely boring and bland.

Instead when students walk the hallways here they see colorful signs advertising fun events and some might even look forward to coming to school.

StuCo keeps us informed, entertained and they help to give back. They do all these things and ask nothing from the rest of the student body.

Student body president Cierra Sullivan, the rest of the officers, and the 300-plus members of Student Council are the unsung heroes of this school. They grease the wheels of this 114-year-old community of teachers and students. So give this selfless organization a “thank you” or some sort of recognition every once in a while, and forgive them when they make little mistakes, because they are doing so much right.
