Farmers fight for first district win

Lewisville will go head to head with Flower Mound for the homecoming game on Friday night, October 12th.

Both teams have had a similar record in the preseason, Lewisville at 1-4, and Flower Mound at 2-3; however, the Farmers have been preparing this past bye week for Friday night’s game.

“I think it’s gonna’ be a good game,” Senior co-captain Quay Bradford said. “The way we’ve been practicing this whole week, it seems like we’re ready. We have a good chance [of winning].”

Many of the players, such as Senior running back Deandre Brown, believe that the reason for their losses is the lack of execution.

“We haven’t executed the plan, and sometimes we have people on the team that are not practicing up to par,” Brown said.  “We practice like we play, and we’re not practicing hard enough, therefore we don’t play well enough. We’ve changed that now.”

Head coach Gregg Miller believes both teams share an equal chance to take home the win.

“I think we need to play very well if we want to have a chance to beat or play with them,” Miller said. “They’ve won a couple of games and they have a new coach too, like us. So their system’s kinda new; our system’s kinda new. Whoever plays best and doesn’t create mistakes is [going to] win.”

Miller has bonded well with the players up to this point in the season

“I actually thought it was going to take a while for us to get used to [Coach Miller],” Senior co-captain Jordan Meyers said. “But everybody adapted. We’re like a big family.”

Although the coaching change has switched things up entirely for the team, many of the players see Miller’s changes as something that could completely change the team for the better, and give the football players a whole new reputation.

“For one, our behavior in class has changed,” Junior defensive linebacker Devin Tillis said. “We are actually being more mature and keeping ourselves from getting into trouble and focusing on keeping our grades up.”

Although he has won the trust of most of the team, Miller still sees the changes in some of the players’ eyes.

“You know, when you try to change everything, it’s hard for kids not to go back to what they’ve been used to doing sometimes,” Miller said.” It’s hard to get kids to play for you when they don’t know you very well.”

Many of the players agreed that the changes have had a great impact with the team as a whole.

“Everything’s great,” Junior quarterback Matt McDougal said. “Coach Miller’s doing a good job here. Everyone’s glad that he came.”

Even though Lewisville has lost the majority of their games, Miller continues to have confidence in the team.

“I love our team, I love our kids. They’ve been working really, really hard. They put so much effort into this thing, you know. It just hurts to be 1-4 right now, and four losses just hurt so bad,” Miller said. “I feel like we could have won all of those games really, if we’d had just put together four quarters. I really think our team doesn’t know how good they could be, if they could just put it together, a little confidence, trust, I think they could be real outstanding.”

The team has adjusted to the new coaching staff, and is displaying their pride on the field week-in and week-out.

“The team this year, I think is a lot different from the team last year,” Senior Trustin Benson said. “The team this year is showing that they care about this football season and that they [want to] win and go to the playoffs.”
