Only one round away from the state softball tournament, the Keller Indians are the only thing that stand in the way of the Farmers’ path to Austin. The team will face the Indians tonight at 7 p.m. at Argyle High School. Keller, a team of mainly upperclassmen, kept a 13-1 record in district 5-6A this season with a 25-4 overall record.

Keller’s only district loss came on March 7 from Denton Guyer, whom Lewisville knocked out two weeks ago in the regional quarterfinals. To top that, the Indians have gone a perfect 8-0 through the postseason. They have swept every team through the first four rounds including 6-6A teams Plano Senior in bi-district and Flower Mound in the regional quarterfinals.

The Indians are hot at the plate hitting .371 as a team according to Dallas Morning News. Junior Mikayla McClasky [.553 avg.] and senior Kaitlyn Alderink [.440 avg] provide base hits for Keller, while a majority of the power sources from freshman Kasey Simpson [.433 avg, 3 HR, 22 RBIs].

Junior Kaylee Rodgers, Keller’s main pitcher, will step in the circle tonight for the Indians. Rodgers kept a 14-2 record this year, accompanied by her 2.63 ERA and 85 strikeouts.

Junior outfielder Nicole Nelson said she has been happy with the way her and her team have been playing. Nelson said she believes they can keep up the winning trend against Keller.

“They have a couple of good hitters and a good pitcher,” Nelson said. “I still feel like they are very beatable.”

Last series the Farmers downed softball powerhouse Arlington Martin in a two-game sweep. In game 2, the heart of the lineup proved most effective for the Farmers as junior Maribeth Gorsuch [3rd in the lineup], sophomore Kaylee Rodriquez [4th], and freshman Mikayla Corbin [5th] all hit home runs, and all had multi-hit games.

To top their recent boost in offense, Lewisville played superb defense only allowing one error and just two runs all series. Gorsuch struck out 26 of the 42 Martin batters she faced, giving her 91 strikeouts in this postseason alone.
