In an effort to raise money for the American Heart Association, Student Council is hosting the first King & Queen of Hearts competition.

The American Heart Association is a non-profit organization that promotes cardiac care to reduce complications caused by cardiovascular disease and/or strokes.

“The American Heart Association is a huge national non-profit helping those with heart disease, also preventative action,” StuCo adviser Allison Stamey said.

Seniors compete to receive the most nomination forms so they can qualify in the top five girls and boys. Nomination forms are in the StuCo room, G144, and forms are due on Wednesday, Jan. 24.

After the top five places for both girls and boys have been determined, each nominee will raise as much money as they can by Tuesday, Feb. 6. The nominees with the most donations will be crowned at noon in the cafeteria on Valentines Day.

“It is basically a project where we encourage students at LHS to collect money for the American Heart Association,” senior Claire Marrone said. “Since it is around Valentines Day we just associate it with that and kind of make it into a competition, so people can have fun also while raising money for a good cause.”

In addition to the King & Queen of Hearts competition, StuCo hosts drives and various activities to donate money to other organizations such as helping kids with leukemia.

“We always do different ones; like last year we did leukemia and this year we are doing American Heart Association,” junior Yesenia Regalado said. “We always do it every year and it is a great way to support other associations.”
