Team claims final home win over Marauders

For the varsity baseball team, the final game with Marcus wasn’t just a district rivalry played on their home field.

It also happened to be “Senior Night.” And the Farmers took advantage of the opportunity, beating the Marauders 5-1 to avenge an earlier shutout loss.

“We came together on offense and defense on both parts,” senior pitcher/ infielder Taylor Munden said. “It was one of our best games of the season.”

Munden finished the season leading the team offensively with his .459 batting average, contributing 16 RBIs along with 3 home runs.

“He’s done very well,” coach Mike Campbell said.

With an overall record of 11-19-1 and a district record of 5-9, Lewisville finished the season ranked sixth in the 8-5A district.

Along with Munden, pitcher/infielder Niko Buentello, a sophomore finishing with a .365 average, has batted in 37 runs and sent 9 over the fence.

In the Farmers’ final game this season, he crushed a 3-run homer over the left field wall to set the school’s season record for home runs.

Munden, along with other seniors, has helped lead the team especially, Campbell said.

“A senior, if he’s worth his salt, will step up in a game,” Campbell said. “It doesn’t matter what they say if they don’t back it up.”

When asked who was most beneficial to the team defensively, Campbell named each player on the field, beginning with senior catcher Nathan Gutierrez, who has only allowed three passed balls this season.

“He’s doing a tremendous job,” Campbell said of the senior.

Others included sophomore Brian Deaver, junior Justin Dito, and seniors Michael Ripple and Ben Knapp.

“Defense is mental in my opinion,” Campbell said. “Errors are mental.

“If you’re ready to play, you’ll play solid defense. If you’re not, you won’t.”

The Farmers went up against some very challenging opponents due to the district 8-5A competition.

“All the teams in this district are tough,” Campbell said.

The only thing [that held] the team back, he said, was coming out on top in the tough match-ups.

“We [needed to be] more consistent,” Campbell said. “Just win close games and put somebody away.”
